GUILFORD -- A 94-year-old Dummerston woman died Sunday, Feb. 10, of injuries sustained in a motor-vehicle accident three days earlier.
Jean Anderson was riding as a passenger in a car driven by Mary Evelyn Lunge on Thursday, Feb. 7, when Lunge apparently had fallen asleep at the wheel while traveling southbound on Weatherhead Hollow Road, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and slamming head-on into a tree. Anderson was extricated from the vehicle by Guilford Fire Department and airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to Vermont State Police. Though Anderson died on Feb. 10, the Reformer did not receive a statement from police until Monday, Feb. 18.
This investigation is ongoing and anyone with information related to this crash, who has not already spoken with Vermont State Police, is asked to contact Trooper Dan Bennett at the Brattleboro Barracks at 802-254-2382.
According to her obituary, Anderson was born at her grandmother's farm in Sutton, N.H. on Oct. 22, 1918, the daughter of the late Earl and Hazel (Colby) Barnard. She married Laurence E. Anderson Sr. on Oct. 23, 1938, and together they celebrated 65 years of marriage until his death in 2004. In 1947 they spent two years living in Marlow, N.H., then moved to Guilford and Brattleboro, and finally in 1967, they made Dummerston their permanent home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Laurence E. Anderson Sr.; a sister, Ellen Carpenter; a brother, Earl Barnard, and a daughter-in- law, Patti Anderson. She is survived by a son, Laurence E. Anderson Jr. and his wife Charlene of Brattleboro; a daughter, Sally Peltz and her husband David of Niles, Mich.; a sister, Erleine Putnam of Eastham, Mass.; and a sister-in-law, Martha Barnard of Brattleboro.
A memorial service at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home was scheduled to be held on Friday, Feb. 15. Burial will take place in the spring.
