BRATTLEBORO -- Patty Gilligan, owner of the newly opened Avenue Hair Design, proves that dreams do come true. She always dreamed of owning her own hair salon, and when Andrea Whitman of Whitmans' Hair Design made the decision to retire and close her salon where Patty had been employed for the last 26 years, she knew the time was right. The timing was perfect and the location was perfect for Patty to oversee the reconstruction of the former Sunny's Sonoco station on Western Avenue in Brattleboro, transforming it into her vision to offer her clients a spa-like feel of relaxation, and calm. Plenty of parking and easy access for handicapped customers is an added plus. The serenity in her face is evidence that she is happy with her decision.
Obviously comfortable in her environment in the salon, Patty provides expert hair care as she has been a practicing cosmetologist/hair stylist since 1987, and has the distinct honor of being the first graduate from Whitmans' School of Hair Design in 1986. Over the years as a stylist at Whitmans' she has acquired quite a following, and these loyal customers have followed her to the Avenue.
Inside her salon, relaxing music from her own personal collection fills the room, sunshine pours in from the large front windows, and tastefully placed art and floral arrangements provide a warm welcome.
Patty offers all the usual beautifying services such as coloring, perming, highlighting, facial waxing and more.
Patty also specializes in pampering feet with pedicures. Just a sampling off of her extensive pedicure menu: a paraffin pedicure to soften the toughest of feet; or how about the one specially for men, the ROCK pedicure, so fellas, relax with a salt foot scrub while sipping on peppermint tea; and to soothe the abuse that sports enthusiasts do to their feet is the athletic pedicure. And there are many more to choose from.
When asked what her plans for the future are, she said that presently she carries Paul Mitchell, Bed Head and Moroccan Oil, but intends to expand to 5 or 6 product lines so that she may offer hair care for every hair type.
She also said she plans on continuing to grow her client base by bringing on another stylist, and was now on the hunt for someone with 4 to 5 years experience that has an existing clientele.
The hours at the salon are: Closed Sunday and Monday; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., (subject to change). For an appointment give Patty a call at 802-258-2002. When not at her salon at 205 Western Ave., Brattleboro, Patty is busy with her husband Randy Gilligan and two teenage sons, and she resides in Vernon.
In the end Patty stated, " It's all about the passion for hair and the beauty business," and her dedication showed.
