SPRINGFIELD (AP) - A Vermont man who was convicted in 2008 of killing a Stowe woman 17 years earlier has died in prison.

Vermont's top Corrections officer says Howard Godfrey died Tuesday at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield.

The 1991 death of 28-year-old Patricia Scoville went unsolved for years until after the Legislature passed a law, with the help of Scoville's parents, that set up a DNA database. A random DNA test in 2005 linked Godfrey to the killing, and he was convicted three years later.

Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito confirmed Godfrey's death. He couldn't provide the cause but he said Godfrey's death was expected.
