BRATTLEBORO >> Residents are being asked to participate in a series of meetings that will address options for updating police and fire facilities.
"The purpose of these meetings is to present our thoughts and our potential plans about what could happen to our police-fire project and to gather the broadest possible public input about what people think should happen," said Selectboard Chairman David Gartenstein at Tuesday's meeting. "That's including the people who think the facilities should be fixed and the people who are concerned about the impact on their tax rate. We need to hear from everybody because it is our plan to, in the next three or four months, get this project back on track and moving towards construction in whatever way is approved."
Meetings will be held in the Green Street School gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 9 a.m.; in the Academy School gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m.; and in the Brattleboro Area Middle School multipurpose room on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m.
The purchase option agreement was "still not ready for our review at this point," said Gartenstein, referring to 62 Black Mountain Road or the Reformer building. The property was previously identified as a viable option for housing the police department. Newspaper operations could continue in another part of the building, paying rent to the town. Other options could see renovations made to the police department's current location inside the Municipal Center.
Town Manager Peter Elwell, who received quotes for sending postcards about the meetings out to residences and businesses, said they would reach people who may not be paying close attention. The low bid, $2,389, was accepted.
"There's still going to be a lot of people who don't get this message or come in afterwards and say they've never heard of it," said board member John Allen, bringing up the possibility of hanging banners downtown. "I just think we need to do everything we possibly can other than hire a blimp to go over Brattleboro."
