BRATTLEBORO >> The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center invites creators of all ages to design and build original LEGO sculptures and display them at the museum this fall in BMAC's Eighth Annual LEGO Contest & Exhibit, taking place Nov. 20 to 22. This popular annual event is sponsored by Brattleboro Ford Subaru, G.S. Precision, Inc., and Don Robinson, Builder.
"This has grown into a great community affair," said BMAC director Danny Lichtenfeld. "We regularly receive entries from contestants ranging in age from toddlers to senior citizens. Most entries are from the tri-state area surrounding Brattleboro, but we always have some from farther afield. One year, we even received an entry by mail from New Jersey."
Every entry received will be displayed at the museum. A panel of judges will award prizes based on creativity and craftsmanship in six age groups. There will also be overall prizes for best in show, best architectural design, best use of moving parts, best title, best diorama, and best space-themed creation. Every contestant will receive a personalized certificate of participation and four complimentary admission passes to BMAC.
According to Lichtenfeld, memorable entries have included a replica of BMAC, an amusement park, a model of Brattleboro's Harris Hill ski jump, a working wind-up clock, and a working pinball machine.
"One thing we want to emphasize," Lichtenfeld said, "is that the contest element is really just for fun. The best part of this event is that it encourages kids — and adults — to put their hands and minds to work in creating something original, which we are happy to put on display in the museum."
Contest entries must be delivered to the museum on Wednesday, November 18, between 4 and 6 p.m., along with an entry form and $5 entry fee. The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place Friday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m., with all entries remaining on display at the museum through Sunday, Nov. 22. Contest guidelines and entry forms are available at www.brattleboromuseum.org or by calling 802-257-0124, ext. 101.
Major support for BMAC is provided by its members, the Vermont Arts Council, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Sam's Outdoor Outfitters, People's United Bank, Brattleboro Ford Subaru, Whetstone Station Restaurant & Brewery, and Allen Brothers Oil.
