BRATTLEBORO — Talks on downtown traffic lights — whether they should stay cyclical or return to flashing — are not over.

"We have retained the services of a traffic engineer to assist us in analyzing how the system works today and what can be done to improve flow through that area," Town Manager Peter Elwell said at a meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10. "We know that there's going to be a cycle versus flash conversation in this setting at some future Selectboard meeting."

Suggesting the town look for "an engineer-based solution" that will address both safety and traffic flow in such a congested area as Main Street, Elwell acknowledged the strong opinions expressed during previous meetings and in letters to the editor. Before resuming the discussion on the signals, he wanted to have specialists' thoughts presented on the matter.

Selectboard Chairman David Gartenstein said the board had hoped to bring up the topic sooner.

"But that's not going to happen," he said. "We're going to be working with a traffic engineer and hope to have the data collected by the new year."

A public discussion is expected around January.
