BELLOWS FALLS — For those that need a stress relief from their busy work week, 45 Rockingham Street may offer a 15 to 20 minute solution.
Radiant Roots Organic Spa opened up in the heart of the village this past August when Syndie Gruszczynski moved from Connecticut with the desire to get out of the urban lifestyle and start her own massage therapy business in a more relaxed setting. The startup began about eight months after she made the initial move to Vermont and Radian Roots has been a dream come true for her.
"Ever since I graduated I wanted to have my own place, but Connecticut is a lot different than Vermont," said Gruszczynski. She described Newington as overpopulated and busy, where it was common to find five spas and 10 gas stations off every turnpike. "It was just so overwhelming, and I wanted to get out so I could have a simple, relaxed and laid-back life."
Though Bellows Falls is not as busy compared to Newington, the atmosphere of Radiant Roots Organic Spa takes away the feeling of a fast-paced life. The lighting is dimmed around a hand-painted mural of crystals that covers the walls at the entrance way, and guests are greeted with soothing instrumental music and the trickling sound of water from a small fountain that sits upon a shelf. Once the customer is ready for a massage, Gruszczynski leads them into a room with a massage table and one large wall that displays a hand-painted mural of a weeping willow tree.
"I want this to be a space for someone to come where they can feel comfortable and relaxed and let go of stress and tension in their body. I really do love for someone to come in here and feel so much better when they leave," she said.
Aside from the aura of the business, Gruszczynski stays true to her values of offering organic services. She said she only uses USDA certified skin care products and allows her customers to choose a scent of their choice. Radiant Roots offers five types of services which include massage therapy, body polish, foot soak, speciality massage therapy and speciality treatments. Customers can choose a massage ranging from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the style, and the massage variations include Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, aromatherapy, pregnancy or chair that range anywhere from $20 to $100.
The intention for Swedish massage is that it will be relaxing through a light to medium pressure, whereas deep tissue is more intentional with stretching and is a medium to deep pressure. Hot stone is also said to be a relaxing method of massage that incorporates some Swedish massage techniques.
Though she is new to Vermont, her skills in the spa business are not foreign. Gruszczynski grew-up in Connecticut and studied at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy where she became a licensed massage therapist through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Work. Since earning her certification five years ago, she has worked at the Art of Touch, a spa in Newington, Conn. As for local massage therapy, she was employed at the Hermitage Club in Wilmington until she found the space at 45 Rockingham St. and began the journey of a business owner.
Gruszczynski is looking to further her education and is currently taking courses that will allow her to become a certified crystal healer. Crystal healing is a pseudoscientific alternative medicine technique that employs stones and crystals.
"I love crystals and believe that they create a peaceful environment. It's like an earthy setting that keeps us connected to the earth and helps take away from all the electronics," said Gruszczynski.
In addition to her services she sells gift certificates and sells some USDA skin care products. She also encourages those that are interested to check out Radian RootsSpa's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/RadiantRootsOrganicSpa The Facebook page is serving as her unofficial website and is a place where customers can see her giveaways or monthly specials, such as "Decadent December," where she has made offers such as $5 off an appointment or 5 percent off any retail items. She notes that these are Facebook page exclusive deals.
