WILMINGTON — The downtown could be welcoming a new business if all goes well with a permit application.
"We recently retired up here," said Christina DeMarothy, who owns a retail shop in New Jersey and specializes in vintage and gift items, jewelry, decorative art, and furniture restoration.
Marothy hopes to have a similar store in Wilmington open Thursdays through Sundays. She mentioned wanting to be open during dinner hours at the neighboring Anchor Seafood restaurant.
Todd Gareiss owns the 9 South Main Street building where Marothy is planning to open a business called Jasper. He owns three other residential buildings downtown.
"He's in the process of doing certain levels of renovation on his other buildings, too," Zoning Administrator Craig Ohlson said referring to an apartment building on the corner of Shafter and South Main streets, an apartment building on North Main Street and a two-unit building on East Main Street.
A brief hearing on Gareiss' application for a conditional use permit to open a retail business in an existing building within the village zoning district was held Monday night.
"Everything that you're looking to do is what we want to promote," Development Review Board Chairman Peter Wallace told DeMarothy. "So we're very excited that you're coming to town."
DeMarothy plans to be in the building on Feb. 1 and open sometime in February or March to capitalize on the ski season.
"It would be nice to open before Valentine's Day but I'm not sure that's going to happen," she said, adding she would "absolutely" open the store by President's Weekend. "I'm excited."
The board has 45 days from Monday to issue a decision on the project.
