BRATTLEBORO >> Dick DeGray called for a recount after losing a race for a seat on the Selectboard by just one vote.

Brattleboro's Board of Civil Authority will do the counting, Town Clerk Annette Cappy said. A meeting was scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Municipal Center's Selectboard Meeting Room.

"It's a matter of opening the ballots all sealed up in a special ballot box," said Cappy. "We will be looking for justice of peaces to pair up."

On March 1, DeGray received 1,504 votes to Avery Schwenk's 1,505 votes. DeGray has served on the board in the past. Schwenk, Hermit Thrush Brewery owner, is a newcomer to the position.

Only ballots from the DeGray-Schwenk race will be counted. Cappy said the results will be announced immediately after the recount. She doesn't expect it to take longer than two hours.

The last time there was a recount was about 10 years ago and it was for a justice of peace race, Cappy told the Reformer. She recalled a Selectboard race in the 1990s where a recount changed who was elected. Matt Speno ended up taking the seat instead of Shoshana Rihn.

Regarding the decision to call for a recount, DeGray said, "I came to it on my own volition."

"I think I owe it to myself and I owe it to the people who voted for me," he added. "I certainly accept the outcome. If it doesn't come out in my favor then I'll turn the page and move on."
