WILMINGTON >> Lawyers looking for work need look no further. The town's hiring.

"Sometime in the fall I think it was, the Select Board voted to get a new town attorney because our current attorney at the time — Bob Fisher, who was doing an excellent job with us by the way — was very heavily involved with the Hermitage Club," said Town Manager Scott Murphy, referring to the company which runs a private ski resort at Haystack Mountain, and a golf course and airport in the Deerfield Valley. "We kept bumping into issues that were overlapping."

Local attorneys Lance Shader and Chris Cady were used in the meantime along with Rob Woolmington from the Bennington and Manchester area.

Shader stepped in to help the town with its agreement on fire services with the Hermitage Club. The company is expected to provide funding and housing for a new fire truck. The deal has to do with plans to build a new hotel by Haystack.

The process of finding a permanent replacement for Fisher is taking awhile, Murphy told the Reformer. A request for qualifications or RFQ previously went out and a couple "decent responses" came back, he said. But the Select Board wanted more to choose from.

The town put out another RFQ on Tuesday.

"We already got some interest from up north in the Burlington area," Murphy said. "I think they (Select Board) might want to interview some of these people."

The RFQ said approximately 2,000 residents live in Wilmington where the annual operating budget is approximately $4 million. About 30 full-time employees work for the town.

Some of Wilmington's legal needs will involve general counsel on municipal law, tax assessing and exemptions, contracts, personnel issues, employment law, land-use enforcement, municipal ordinances, tax sales, permitting, real estate sales, waste water, storm water and Act 250 review, which is the state's permitting that addresses environmental impact.

"The Town has shown a clean audit for the past several years with assets exceeding liabilities by over $10 million," the RFQ on wilmingtonvermont.us stated. "All relevant experience should be noted in your response. The Town may select one or more firms or individuals to meet its needs depending on qualifications and experience."
