BRATTLEBORO >> Furry pets and other local pet companions were featured in the Reformer's annual "Pet of the Month"contest. This year, 12 animals walked away as winners and $500 was generated from votes, all proceeds going toward the Windham County Humane Society.

Perhaps $500 doesn't sound like much for a fundraiser, but considering each vote was at cost of 25 cents means that 2,000 votes were cast during the competition.

According to WCHS Executive Director Annie Guion, the money raised will go toward caring for animals, whether getting to the veterinarian or providing vet care in house for things such as medication, flea and tick, wormer, vaccines, spade and neuter.

Guion said that event donations like these also help low-income pet owners keep their animals at their home through their Pet Care Assistance program, which serves about 600 people, representing about 2,000 animals.

"It's two-fold; it raises money that we need to care for animals in need and it raises awareness, putting our name and One Stop Pet's name in the newspaper," said Guion. "One stop is really amazing, they support us at pretty much every turn, and I love that Saskia Whalen is the owner. She totally supports the Pet Care Assistance program."

Guion noted the importance of the One Stop Country Pet Supply and WCHS relationship. She says that animals such as bunnies at WCHS do not "move so well" from the shelter as compared to at One Stop. Guion says to expedite the process in which these bunnies can find a home, bunnies are often sent over to One Stop where they are sold quicker. When a purchase is made, an adoption fee is then sent to WCHS and it provides a certificate to pet owner, which allows for a $50 neuter or spade session.

The Pet of the Month contest has appeared in the Brattleboro Reformer for about 10-plus years, that has typically been well received by customers. A different pet winner will be featured in the newspaper each month of the next 12 months.

Windham County Humane Society is located at 916 West River Road, Brattleboro, and One Stop Country Pet Supply is located at 648 Putney Road, Brattleboro.
