Jimmy Fund Golf extends its sincerest thanks to the organizers and sponsors of the Corbeil Classic held on June 20, at Brattleboro Country Club in Brattleboro. Special recognition and appreciation goes to Kelli Corbeil of Brattleboro and the committee who organized the 20th annual event.

The dedicated sponsors, participants and volunteers helped raise critical funds in memory of J. Wayne and Bill Corbeil to support lifesaving cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Corbeil Classic is one of the many golf tournaments that will be held in 2012 to raise funds for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber. The presenting sponsors for Jimmy Fund Golf’s 2012 season are American Airlines, Callaway, CHAMP Spikes, Dunkin’ Donuts, Forty Seven Brand, HomeGoods, The International Golf Club and Wicked Local.

From traditional golf tournaments and country club member events to mini golf tournaments and all day golf marathons, volunteers create golf fundraisers that combine their love of the sport with their desire to support the fight against cancer. Each event is an incredibly rewarding and fun way to support a great cause. Those interested in finding out ways to support Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund through golf may visit www.jimmyfundgolf.org or call 866-521-4653 to learn how.

I recently had the opportunity to attend, with my husband, an Event in the Tent. I had been putting pieces of this together for weeks for Music New England and specifically Hugh Keelan. I heard with total excitement about this event and the vision that Hugh and his partner Mark Burke had for weeks. We copied music, bound music, printed prototypes, made postcards, posters and invitations. The list was endless but the excitement grew each time they entered my work. I just had to attend to see what the finished product looked (or more specifically) sounded like.

I had to work that Saturday until mid afternoon, but as soon as I had a replacement, off we were to check out this gala event. These guys had thought of everything. Parking at the high school with busses to shuttle to the event to keep traffic flowing. Great idea. Golf cart shuttles up to the ticket tent so people didn’t overdo before the performances began. Very thoughtful. Amazing weather (OK, they really had no control over that one), and a setting that was heavenly inspired. They had picked what had to be the perfect spot. Listening to that awesome music looking around at the pastoral setting was divine. Every last detail had been thought of and dealt with. We enjoyed some wonderful musicians and talent that I had no idea existed in these hills. Guest singers delighted us with classics (some known and some not known, but delightful all the same). Nimble Arts added such depth to the music as they performed so beautifully. With all of the performances under that tent, it truly was an event.

I am so glad that we are fortunate to have visionaries in our area who create these types of events for us to partake in. My only wish is that more people had attended to see the vision become reality. The next time you see a poster or get an invitation to an Event in the Tent, don’t pass the opportunity by. Invite some friends to join you and delight your senses. I know I did.

Thank you Hugh, Mark and all involved for a great afternoon in southern Vermont.

The Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition would like to thank the businesses that participated in the Responsible Beverage Service Trainings held in June co-sponsored by the Department of Liquor Control.

BAPC recognizes the important role that local retailers and restaurants play in preventing underage drinking. Thank you to the following businesses for participating in the training:

Al Ducci’s Italian Pantry, Julep Corp.; Allen Brothers; Blue Moose Cafe; Cumberland Farms; Entera Catering; Fireworks Restaurant; Fraternal Order Eagles; Irfan Corp, DBA; Marina Restaurant; P.K.’s Public House; Pangaea Restaurant/Hildene Catering; Pierce Lawton American Legion Post 37; Planet Gas; Price Chopper; Putney Road Market; Rick’s Tavern; Rocky Top Tavern; Schoolhouse Grocery; Valley View Saloon.

Fifty-one employees of retailers and establishments that serve or sell alcohol and/or tobacco attended the trainings. Congratulations to Alfred L. Scheps. and William A Smith who each won a $25.00 gift certificate in the trainings’ raffles.

Sponsoring the Responsible Beverage Service Trainings is part of Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition’s comprehensive approach to increase collaboration with local retailers to reduce and prevent underage use of alcohol and tobacco and sales/service to intoxicated customers in our community. Other retailer projects include the Brattleboro Responsible Retailing Project (helping licensees prevent underage alcohol sales and sales/service to intoxicated customers); and the Healthy Retailers initiative which encourages healthier food and beverage choices and discourages tobacco and alcohol use among youth.

Please be part of the solution by joining BAPC in preventing substance abuse in our community. Call 257-2175 for more information.
