WILMINGTON -- The Windham Regional Commission and the Bennington County Regional Commission are hosting a Southern Vermont Rivers Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wilmington Memorial Hall, 4 West Main Street. The forum is meant to help the public and public officials to understand the science of why rivers and streams do what they do, their relationship to our roads and communities, and the regulatory framework.

The general public, town officials and employees, members of town commissions and boards, floodplain managers, and representatives from non-governmental organizations are invited. Attendance is free. Lunch is provided to those who RSVP.

Topics include: River Science: The Old and the New, by Sacha Pealer, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Rivers Program; Headwaters and Watershed Health by Dan McKinley, Fisheries Biologist with the Green Mountain National Forest; Permitting and Regulations by Rob Evans and Rebecca Pfeiffer, VT DEC Floodplain Managers; River-related Road Crew Safety Techniques and Equipment by David Antone, Vermont Local Roads; New Technologies for Road Repair and Construction by Dr. Richard Downer, FEMA; and Transportation Capital Improvement Planning and Hazard Mitigation Strategies by WRC planners and Ray Doherty and Misha Bailey, Vermont Emergency Management.
