Wake up, USA

Editor of the Reformer:

May 30 is Memorial Day this year. (Memorial Day always used to be on May 30 until 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which changed it to the last Monday in May). This May 30 is also the second anniversary of my father's death. My father was a WWII veteran who proudly enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18. He served aboard the LST 293, saw battle and suffered a chronic injury as a result.

If my father was still with us today he would be marching with the VFW in the Commack, Long Island, Memorial Day parade along Veterans Highway. He was so proud of serving his country. The country to which his parents (legally) immigrated to gave their children a better life. I miss him with all that I am, but part of me is glad that he isn't here to see what has become of the USA that he loved.

His generation, "the greatest generation," fought a war against communism and Ssocialism, fought to keep our country free, free to worship, raise our families, educate our children, and run a business without the government interfering every step of the way.

Sadly, we are closer than ever to putting an admitted socialist into the White House. We've lost our borders, no longer are we a sovereign nation. Our military is underfunded, risking our very national security. Many of today's veterans are unemployed, homeless or on the verge of suicide because they have literally been put on hold by the VA and forgotten by a generation that doesn't care about being free, but only about how much free stuff they can get.

So, this Memorial Day weekend I will travel to New York, not to watch a parade, but to visit Calverton National Cemetery where my father is laid to rest beside thousands of men and women who also served, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I will pray that their sacrifices were not in vain. That our great country will wake up and take back everything that my parents' generation cherished, fought for and died for.
