Edward H. Softky, 44, of Brattleboro, was severely injured after Jean M. Mahoney, 63, also of Brattleboro, struck him with her motor vehicle and fled the scene around 8:30 a.m., according to preliminary reports from the Brattleboro Police Department.
According to police, Mahoney was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.
Rescue Inc. transported Softky to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 9 a.m.
Police said the victim was assisted by bystanders until authorities arrived, who were then given a description of the suspect's car by witnesses to the accident.
The Brattleboro Police located the suspected vehicle at an apartment complex in Brattleboro about a half-hour later. They arrested Mahoney, who faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs with death resulting, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, grossly negligent operation of a motor vehicle and cruelty to a child.
Mahoney was ordered held on $25,000 bail and will appear in Windham District Court today to answer these charges.
Softky was near his white Toyota Corolla on the side of the road near the corner of High and Oak streets as Mahoney was heading west and struck him. His vehicle was damaged from the impact when police arrived on scene, with the rear door on the driver's side left open.
According to police, the local detective division assisted in the investigation by processing and collecting evidence at both the crime scene and the scene where the suspected vehicle was located. Police also executed several search warrants as well.
Streets in the vicinity of the accident were closed for approximately four hours as police conducted their investigation.
Windham County State's Attorney Tracy Shriver said once the attorney's office is presented with the police investigation materials, they will decide to proceed with any further criminal charges.
Officials with the Vermont State Police and the Brattleboro Police are still investigating the incident.
