CHESTERFIELD, N.H. -- Students at the Chesterfield School are very involved in their music programs.
General music courses run from kindergarten through eighth grade, with students given the opportunity to pick up an instrument in fourth grade. Thirty-five youngsters are currently learning how to play their woodwinds and string instruments.
A band for fifth- and sixth-graders has 44 members. For students in seventh and eighth-grade -- 26 play in the band while 44 sing in the chorus.
In addition to all that, Chesterfield offers two after-school activities, jazz band and choraliers.
With all the different musical aspects with the halls of the school, educators have to find new and innovative ways to raise funding for the department.
Starting last year, the school begin the "Ultimate Home Party" event, a fundraising effort for the music department. The initial event brought in roughly $1,300.
"A portion of all the proceeds here today will go to support music programs here at Chesterfield School," said Alison Schoales, one of the music teachers. Twelve vendors attended the Saturday fundraiser to assist the town’s music department, she said.
Held in the school gymnasium, the fundraiser brought Avon, Silpada, Arbonne, the Pampered Chef, Discovery Toys, Red Barn Artworks and more for patrons looking for some early holiday shopping ideas and a chance to assist Chesterfield’s young musicians.
According to Schoales, the
The honor society, a program of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, was established in 1936. With more than 5,500 chapters around the world, the project looks to inspire the next generation of musicians while recognizing student achievements in the field.
