MONTPELIER -- Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin is way ahead in funding his re-election campaign against Republican state Sen. Randy Brock, according to campaign finance reports filed Wednesday.
Shumlin reported nearly $840,000 in contributions so far, saying he has about $769,000 in cash in the bank. His war chest included about $25,000 left over from his 2010 campaign. During the month since the last campaign finance reports of July 15, Shumlin raised about $160,000.
Brock reported about $585,000 contributions so far, including $300,000 from himself, and appears to have about $234,000 in cash on hand. He raised about $55,000 during the past month.
In another closely watched race, the Democratic primary for attorney general, challenger T.J. Donovan, continues to outpace incumbent Bill Sorrell, the reports showed.
Donovan reported he had raised about $167,000 and spent more than $110,000 of that in the campaign so far. Sorrell said he's raised about $115,000 and spent more than $57,000 so far. Donovan had raised about $37,000 during the past month, while Sorrell had raised about $23,000
The winner of the Aug. 28 primary faces Republican Jack McMullen, who had raised about $19,000 so far in the campaign.
In the contest for state treasurer, incumbent Democrat Beth Pearce maintained her fundraising lead over Republican Rutland City Treasurer Wendy Wilton, though Wilton had closed the gab slightly in the past
Pearce reported raising more than $95,000 so far in the campaign, with more than $11,000 coming in the past month. She had spent $50,000 so far in the campaign, her report said. Wilton raised nearly $19,000 during the past month but still lagged behind Pearce, with about $35,000 raised so far in the campaign. Wilton had spent about $13,000 so far.
Republican state Sen. Vincent Illuzzi reported raising about $51,000 so far in his campaign for state auditor of accounts, easily outpacing the roughly $27,000 raised by Democrat Doug Hoffer.
Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Scott reported raising about $59,000 so far in the campaign, versus $15,000 for Democrat Cassandra Gekas.
