VERNON -- With swimming season over, town officials are turning their attention to renovations at the Vernon Recreation Area.

The Selectboard this week approved a $29,000 contract for roof replacement on four structures at the facility off Pond Road.

"The work will get started as soon as possible, to be completed by the end of October," said Seth Deyo, the town’s recreation director.

Finnell Roofing of Brattleboro won the job by submitting the lowest of three bids. Two other bids, also from Brattleboro companies, were for $34,935 and $38,963.

The work includes roof replacement at the recreation area’s bath house, chemical shed, garage and shelter. Two skylights will be added to the shelter’s roof.

Deyo said officials have been eyeing the repairs for some time.

"It’s been in the capital plan, and the money became available July 1," he said, adding that the town’s finance committee signed off on the expenditure.

There have been leaks reported in the shelter area, and that roof "was certainly past it’s useful life," Deyo said.

Also, the other structures’ roofs were projected for replacement now or in the near future, officials said.

The project can go forward now that Vernon’s pool has shut for the season. Deyo said the facility closed Aug. 28, "which coincided with the kids going back to school."

"We had a very busy season. Everything went

really smoothly," Deyo said. "We had a great staff this year and really good weather."

Officials are continuing to develop the recreation department’s website, www.vernonrec.com. Information about soccer, Cub Scouts and other activities has been added to the site.

"It will continue to be a work in progress," Deyo said.
