Font ResizeBELLOWS FALLS -- There are two new dates for obligatory public hearings regarding proposed changes to the village charter.
The first is now scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, while the second will begin at the same time on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Trustee, the head of the charter revisions committee, said the voting day is currently slated for Tuesday, Dec. 4, and will be held at the Bellows Falls Fire/Police Facility.
The initial public hearing was held on Sept. 4. The second was scheduled for Wednesday and the voting day was set for Tuesday, Oct. 4. But at the previous Bellows Falls Village Board of Trustees meeting more time was requested to allow residents to read through the suggested revisions put forth by the charter revisions committee, led by Trustee Deborah Wright.
According to Rockingham Assistant Town Clerk Brenda Doherty, two public hearings are required before changes to a charter can be voted upon. The public hearings enable residents to express concerns and ask questions about the revision committee’s proposed changes.
Doherty previously told the Reformer state law requires the first of the two obligatory hearings to be held no fewer than 30 days before the vote is slated to take place. There is no deadline for the second hearing but no changes to the wording of the proposed amendments can be made within 20 days of the vote.
