BRATTLEBORO -- A Dover woman is facing more than six years behind bars after she allegedly exposed herself to neighbors and their young child while intoxicated.
Nancy L. Free, 63, pleaded not guilty to felony lewd and lascivious conduct and misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest stemming from an Aug. 18 incident in East Dover.
Just before 6:30 p.m., members of the Windham County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a home along Mandy’s Road for a report of a naked woman disturbing a family barbecue.
Deputy Ian Gallup wrote in his affidavit that Free was calling the victims names and swearing at them in front of their young son.
Free returned to her home but a short time later returned and displayed her breasts and genital to the group.
The victims said the 9-year-old boy wasn’t "in direct view" of Free but he ran away upset and that Free shouted insults at him as he left.
When Gallup and Wilmington Police Officer Patrick Brewer interviewed Free in her home she denied exposing herself, but Gallup wrote he detected the strong odor of alcohol and that it appeared she was intoxicated.
"During the conversation I found (Free) to be unable to have a continuous and constructive conversation," he wrote.
Gallup told Free that she was under arrest and she responded that "he had no right to arrest her" and refused to get up from her couch at least three times, the affidavit states.
Free tried to light a cigarette but Gallup grabbed her wrist in an attempt to get her up from the couch and Free responded by dropping to the floor.
Eventually Gallup and Brewer were able to get Free’s wrist behind her and attach the handcuffs, despite her continued twisting and pulling.
As Free was being escorted for transport, Brewer stated she looked at the victims and said "You got it coming now."
If Free is convicted, she faces up to five years behind bars for the felony lewd and lascivious conduct, and up to 14 months for the two misdemeanor charges.
Her next court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
