McNeill’s Brewery receives bronze medal

BRATTLEBORO -- McNeill’s Brewery on Elliot Street recently received a bronze medal at the 19th Great International Beer Festival in Providence, R.I., for its Extra Special Bitter.

This award is the second it received at this competition, bringing the total of awards McNeill’s has received to 15 in four different competitions, including first place on seven different occasions.

"We are pleased to have won again," said Brewmaster Ray McNeill. "Winning once could just be a matter of luck, but after 15 awards we feel vindicated that we have a first rate product line."

The brewery has been in operation since 1991.

Mount Snow offers $12 lift tickets

DOVER -- Mount Snow first opened for skiing on Dec. 12, 1954, and has since enjoyed one of the most colorful and interesting histories of any resort in the ski industry thanks in large part to the resort’s visionary founder, Walter Schoenknecht.

To celebrate that history, Mount Snow has announced that Dec. 12 will be known as Founders Day and skiers and riders can take advantage of $12 advance purchase lift tickets, plus a party in Cuzzins Bar and Grill, birthday cake and a display of memorabilia from its storied past.

Lift tickets must be purchased online at least 48 hours before the day of the event to get the special price and there is a limited quantity of 1,000 tickets available at that rate, but there will be a discounted rate at the lift ticket window for those that missed out on the advance purchase price.

"We are so lucky to be part of a resort that is so steeped in skiing history it only made sense to make Mount Snow’s birthday an annual celebration," said Director of Marketing and Events, Matt Gebo. "We’re planning to throw a party that would have made Walt proud while offering our guests a great deal to come celebrate with us."

Grafton Village Cheese receives world cheese awards

GRAFTON -- For the second consecutive year, Grafton Village Cheese, makers of handcrafted Vermont cheddar and specialty cheeses, walked away with five World Cheese Awards, including a coveted Super Gold Award.

With roots in cheddar since 1892, Grafton Village Cheese’s newest Cave Aged line, which includes cheddars and specialty cheeses that are aged in Grafton’s cave aging facilities, are what shone at this year’s Awards. Grafton Village took home a Super Gold award for Shepsog, a mixed milk cheese (sheep and cow) that is aged for a minimum of five months. Grafton won gold medals for Clothbound Cheddar, Bismark and Naked Cheddar, and a bronze medal for Barndance.

Taking place in late November in Birmingham, England, the World Cheese Awards is the leading and most diverse cheese competition in the world. Of the 2,781 cheeses judged, 55 cheeses were awarded Super Gold medals; and Grafton Village’s Cave Aged Shepsog was among the top 16 in that list.

"It been a great year for awards and recognition from the industry; these World Cheese Awards are the cherry to top off the year," said Dane Huebner, Cheese Artisan at Grafton Village Cheese. "Top 16 and Super Gold for Shepsog is amazing and I’m still wrapping my mind around it."

For the second year in a row, Grafton Village Cheese’s Vermont Clothbound Cheddar earned a gold medal in the medium traditional cheddar category. This classic clothbound cheddar is wrapped in cheesecloth to retain natural moisture while it slowly ages and delivers a very bold cheese flavor with both nut and mushroom notes. Winning a repeat bronze medal is Barndance in the category for cheese made from the milk of more than one animal. This semi-hard sheep’s milk cheese is accented with cow’s milk and has a tangy, mellow flavor.

First-time World Cheese Award winners include Bismark with a Gold in the hard ewe’s milk cheese, plain, and Naked, which earned a Gold in mature traditional cheddar. Bismark is a sheep’s milk cheese that has a taste that is tangy and sweet and builds to a creamy, hazelnut finish. Naked Cheddar enters the aging caves "naked" (not wrapped in cloth) and quickly develops its own natural rind. As a result, it reaches maturity quickly and results in a full and complex buttery taste, achieving a delicate mushroomy palate after just 60 days.

In 2012 alone, Grafton Village Cheese has received 24 top mark awards from various competitions, including the World Cheese Awards, American Cheese Society, the Big E and sofi Awards at the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade.

Bonnyvale seeks potential board members

BRATTLEBORO -- Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center is inviting letters of interest to serve on its Board of Directors. BEEC’s mission is to develop a more ecologically informed citizenry through education and action. It provides educational programing for all ages, in addition to many conservation initiatives. The center has 60 acres of fields and woodland, with hiking trails throughout.

BEEC is seeking applicants with the creativity, enthusiasm, vision and commitment to further our mission. Interested applicants should send a letter or e-mail stating why you are interested in serving on the board and what experience you could bring to the board. A resume would also be appreciated.
