NEWFANE -- A recount did not change the outcome of the race for Newfane town treasurer.
Incumbent Maureen Albert-Piascik retained the office, and her vote total -- 138 -- remained the same from Tuesday night’s tally, officials reported.
The only change is that two votes initially counted for challenger Merle Tessier were really blank votes. So Tessier’s vote total declined from 134 to 132.
Tessier had filed a request for a recount, which is allowable under state law if "the difference between the number of votes cast for a winning candidate and the number of votes cast for a losing candidate is less than 5 percent of the total votes cast for all the candidates for an office, divided by the number of persons to be elected."
The Board of Civil Authority convened to handle the recount.
