CHESTERFIELD, N.H. -- Who said fitness can’t be a good time?

The 5th Annual Chesterfield Fun Run, a day of organized exercise aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and generating funds for Chesterfield Elementary School, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 4.

Josh Goldberg, a parent volunteer since the first event five years ago, said the Fun Run is a product of the Friends of Chesterfield School created by a group of parents that modeled it after a similar event. He said the Fun Run is now the school’s primary fundraiser and has replaced the smaller ones.

There will be a race along a one-mile/five-kilometer route (with two finish lines) that follows country roads past historic farms, a fitness challenge with a variety of physical activities and, for the first time, a 10-kilometer run.

For the one-mile/five-kilometer event, there is a $15 entry fee for all advance registered participants and a $20 fee on race day

The fees for the 10K run are $25 if registered in advance and $30 on race day. Goldberg said the Friends of Chesterfield School are excited about the 10K run, which will take participants through a section of Pisgah State Park.

The Fitness Challenge will take place after the races. It will include activities such as a basketball throw, a soccer kick, a tire run, push-ups and sit-ups. Each station will offer a colored bracelet to anyone tries the challenge.

Goldberg, who has two daughters at Chesterfield Elementary, said the Fun Run is a vital fundraiser.

"Without it, we really we couldn’t do the things we can do throughout the year," he said in reference to the non-curricular educational programs like inviting artists to the school, providing financial assistance for field trips and occasionally providing individual grants to teachers for their projects.

"(The Fun Run) is the engine of how the school is run," he said.

Goldberg said there is usually 200 to 300 people in attendance.

Registration on race day begins at 8 a.m.
