BELLOWS FALLS -- The Rockingham Finance Director told the village's trustees any community in the state would be envious of Bellows Falls' tax delinquency rates.
Chip Stearns, also the interim municipal manager, said the delinquency rate on taxes in Bellows Falls is currently 3.4 percent. He told the Bellows Falls Village Board of Trustees on Tuesday that the average is 8 percent in Vermont, with some of the highest percentages reaching 15 or 16.
"The village of Bellows Falls has done well in collecting taxes," he said in the Rockingham Town Hall Lower Theatre during his year-to-date budget status report.
Stearns said $57,785.98 in taxes went delinquent.
In other business:
-- During his manager's report earlier in the meeting, Stearns said Green Mountain Power placed a telephone pole on Atkinson Street and "couldn't have put the drill bit any closer to dead-on center to (a water main) that had marked for water shut-off."
He said doing that ripped the piping (including the spigot in the basement) out of the house. Stearns said the situation was quickly resolved and GMP is footing the bill for the damage caused.
-- The trustees granted six parking spaces time-limited to 30 minutes in front of J & H Hardware for an event scheduled to take place at the Bellows Falls Opera House at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. The Bellows Falls Downtown Development Alliance is hoping to avoid any conflict with store owners.
-- The board also voted to waive a $75 banner fee for Vermont Festivals, LLC.
-- Village President Roger Riccio started a discussion about possibly creating an ordinance regarding livestock.
He said he has received comments about cows on School Street and ducks and chickens elsewhere in the village. Riccio, who stressed he merely wanted to bring it up, said there have been complaints about noise. The village president said there should be some sort of discussion about a new ordinance to address the issue of livestock.
There are ordinances regarding things such as noise and odor, but not livestock.
