NEWFANE -- When Ken Robinson thinks back to when he started his own Screenmobile shop, he can't believe how far it has come in 10 years.

"It's flown by," he said. "It's been incredible."

In July, Windham County's Screenmobile is celebrating its 10th anniversary. There are more customers than ever and Robinson is happy to see the progress he's made.

Currently, the shop resides on Route 30 in Newfane. It is opened year-round. Bringing projects to Screenmobile in the winter is advised because the summer can get really busy.

In celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year, Screenmobile of Newfane is offering 10 percent off in-shop screen work. All projects that are dropped off and picked up are included in the sale.

When Robinson started out in the screening business, he had a mobile trailer that he'd park underneath a car port. Even in the freezing cold, Robinson would be outside, customizing screen doors and windows for his customers. Extra material was kept in a small metal shed next to the car port.

The office was downstairs in the cellar of a home that his wife Gianna and he had just bought.

"We used to run a power cord from the house instead of a generator," said Robinson.

Gianna said they have met a lot of interesting people by servicing the community.

"We filled a niche that people didn't realize they needed before," she added.

Now, there is a shop and storefront as well as space for all the materials and more tools.

The company offers more products now.

Although the weather can still affect installations, it's easier for Robinson and his son Shawn to work on their screening indoors before taking it to their customers.

Products range from window screens, fabricated doors, sliding screen doors to retractable screen doors, panorama screens for garages and two by two screening systems. Screenmobile also sells and installs replacement windows nd doors as well as storm windows and storm panels.

"We don't do a lot, a lot of glass but we do cut more glass and mirror now," said Robinson.

Shawn is mostly on the road performing the installations. Sometimes, his father will go if he needs a hand. Shawn is also a production manager at the Newfane shop.

He's been assisting his father since the business was started. Now, he's been hired on full time.

Robinson always wanted to do something on his own. He had worked in the corporate world for many years, he told the Reformer.

"All the energy I put into working for another company, if I put that energy into something on my own, I thought I would enjoy it more, it would grow and I would have more of a challenge," said Robinson. "So I started looking for what I wanted to do."

One day, Robinson would like to open up another location. But for now, he has his hands full. The summer is a busy time for him.
