GUILFORD -- On Friday, at about 9 p.m., Vermont State Police, Rescue Inc. and the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department responded to Guilford Center Road for a report of a motorcycle crash.

According to the caller, a motorcycle had gone off the road and the operator could be heard yelling for help. Investigation determined that James R. Purchase, 55, of Brattleboro, was traveling east on Guilford Center Road, when he exited onto the shoulder, which caused him to lose control of his motorcycle.

The motorcycle, a 2002 Harley Davidson Softtail, was found to have slid and flipped over before coming to rest on the edge of the roadway.

Purchase sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital by ambulance. He was subsequently transported by DHART to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor in this crash. The incident is still under investigation.

As of Sunday afternoon, Purchase was in stable condition.
