SPOFFORD, N.H. -- Two men were transported to Cheshire Medical Center due to injuries sustained in a head-on collision along Route 9 at the base of Atherton Hill Road.

According to a press release from the Chesterfield Police Department, at just past 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Michael Cady, 46, of Agawam Mass., was driving a 2000 Subaru Forester westbound when he saw a vehicle stopped in front of him waiting to make a left turn onto Atherton Hill Road.

Cady took evasive action and ultimately swerved into oncoming traffic and struck a 2000 Chrysler traveling eastbound on Route 9 almost directly head on.

The driver of the Chrysler was later identified as Dominic Delvecchio, 48, of Keene.

The Subaru spun 90 degrees upon impact and the Chrysler spun 180 degrees landing in a ditch on the south side of the road approximately 100 feet away.

Cady was transported to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital-Keene with serious injuries. Delvecchio was air lifted to U Mass Medical with life threatening injuries, but is currently in stable condition. He had a head injury, a femur fracture and "crushing injuries from the rib cage down," according to Spofford Fire Chief Gordon Rudolph.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front end damage.

The collision is still under investigation. Any persons who may have witnessed this collision is requested to call Lt. Duane Chickering at 603-363-4233 ext 62.

Chesterfield Police Department was assisted by the New Hampshire State Police, Spofford Rescue, Chesterfield Rescue and the Keene Rescue.

Rudolph said there 25 to 30 emergency responders at the scene, including people from the Keene Fire Department.
