BRATTLEBORO -- The Selectboard has appointed a five-member committee that will assist the board in hiring a new town manager for Brattleboro.
Before Tuesday night's meeting the board interviewed eight candidates and later in the night appointed Rhonda Calhoun, Lisa Lorimer, Jeff Lewis, Spoon Agave and Jerry Goldberg to serve on the committee that will interview the town manager candidates and offer their input to the board.
The Selectboard received 62 applications for the vacant town manager position and the board met with five candidates Monday during the first round of interviews.
The Selectboard may, or may not reduce that number down for the second round of interviews.
At Tuesday night's Selectboard meeting board Chairman David Gartenstein said he was not ready to say how many candidates would make it into the second round, though he said the board interviewed candidates with a wide range of skills.
"We are moving toward second round interviews," Gartenstein said. "We had a very productive day. We look forward over the course of the next couple of weeks to get into the second round of interviews and to make the decision promptly."
As part of the hiring process the members of the citizens' committee will conduct their own interviews with the candidates.
The members of the committee will suggest questions they want to ask the candidates.
Those questions need to be approved by the Selectboard.
A Selectboard member will also sit in on the interviews that the committee holds.
A group of town employees will also hold a round of interviews and report back to the Selectboard. The members of the employee group have not been chosen yet.
Then the Selectboard will conduct its own round of second interviews with the candidates, and the candidates will tour the town with assistant town manager Patrick Moreland.
When the board voted on the citizens' committee candidates, Jeff Lewis was unanimously voted on to the committee in the first round of voting.
Goldberg, Lorimer and Agave received four votes in the first round.
During the second round of voting Calhoun received three votes, while each of the other candidates got two votes.
Lewis is the executive director of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation. He was on the town manager search committee that helped hire former town manager Barbara Sondag and said he would look for a new manager with many of the same attributes of Sondag.
Lorimer grew up in Brattleboro and is the former owner of the Vermont Bread Company. She was on the Brattleboro assistant town manager search committee.
Agave has served on a number of town committees and boards, including the Selectboard, the Town Meeting Finance Committee, the Charter Commission, the Planning Commission and the Development Review Board.
Goldberg is executive director of the Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce and has also served on the Brattleboro Traffic Safety Committee, the Board of Directors of Brooks Memorial Library and is a member of Sunrise Rotary of Brattleboro.
Calhoun is new to Brattleboro, having moved to the area nine months ago. She served in a number of positions in city government in Florida.
