BRATTLEBORO -- On Jan. 25, around 9:30 a.m., Brattleboro Police officers responded to the Brattleboro Area Middle School for a report that a 12-year-old girl had been grabbed by another student.

Police conducted an investigation and charged a 16-year-old boy with the unlawful restraint of a 12-year-old girl. The suspect allegedly seized the girl, covered her mouth and restrained her. The girl was able to call for help and the boy fled on foot.

Officers located the boy, who was then charged with this offense. He was released from police custody under several court ordered conditions, including that he may not go onto the middle school or Brattleboro Union High School property.

The boy was released to the custody of a parent after being ordered to Vermont Superior Court Criminal Division. He is enrolled as a student at the high school while the girl is a student at the middle school.

Police notified the administration of both schools, who have assisted and cooperated with the investigation. At the time of this incident, both students were attending a recreation league basketball game taking place at BAMS/BUHS. The activity was not sponsored by the school.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
