WILMINGTON -- With Zoning Administrator Alice Herrick leaving before the end of the month, town officials recently discussed how to proceed with finding a replacement.
"I just want to let you know what's happening and discuss our next steps," said Wilmington Town Manager Scott Murphy. "Generally, the Planning Commission interviews an applicant and makes a recommendation. The Selectboard makes the ultimate decision or appointment. What type of interest we get, we'll have to see. Hopefully, we get good candidates."
Herrick gave her letter of resignation to Murphy before the Development Review Board meeting on March 17, where she announced that she would be leaving. Her last day will be on March 28.
Murphy presented the Selectboard with an advertisement for the position that began to run following the meeting on March 19. Prior to its publication, he had heard from several people who may be considered good candidates.
The advertisement did not say whether the town was seeking a part-time or full-time employee for the position.
"If we advertised part-time, then we'd see less interest," advised Murphy. "In an effort for time, we don't have a deadline. They'll jump on it quicker that way."
The question of whether to keep the position as full-time had come up during budget talks leading up to Town Meeting. It will be brought up at a Selectboard meeting in the future. For now, the town will see what hours or scheduling candidates are generally looking for.
Funding for the position was approved for a full-time salary by voters until fiscal year 2015. The last time the position was part-time was nine years ago.
"I'm hopeful that the person we get or people we get applying will have some good experience and give us a chance to work more fully with both groups and the people on the street that come in with their applications," said Murphy.
Since 2007, Herrick has kept a log of her activities, which included the number of permits, DRB hearing applicants and amount of fees generated. Murphy said that the number of fees generated were fairly level going back to Herrick's start with the town.
