JAMAICA -- Volunteers are currently fulfilling librarian duties as trustees seek to fill the part-time position.

"We need to fill the position right away," said Jamaica Memorial Library Trustee Alice Abraham. "There's a lot going on. We want to train someone, get them in there and get going on programs and grants."

For 14 months, Victoria Tomkinson Duffy held the position but left on maternity leave, then resigned on March 25. Abraham told the Reformer that Duffy was very energetic and trustees appreciated the time she was with the library.

The town funds the position although it wasn't always that way. The expense was picked up when it was approved by the Selectboard about a year ago.

Seven volunteers make up the Jamaica Memorial Library Board of Trustees, which the librarian reports to. Ultimately, the trustees will make a final selection for hiring.

The librarian must be available to work Tuesdays from 12 to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The salary is listed at $13.50 per hour for 14 hours a week and the librarian will be paid one hour per month to attend the trustees' meeting.

Trustees are looking to find the best fit. According to Abraham, they want someone enthusiastic, flexible and creative. Applicants should consider themselves motivated team players who can also work independently.

"We're open to new ideas," she said.

"A person can add their own touches to programming."

Crucial requirements include technology and software proficiency. Candidates are expected to be able to assist patrons with computers, searching for jobs, research and more. Verbal and written skills are also a must.

The ability to engage with children, promote literacy and host different workshops will also be critical in the trustees' selection.

"Through the year, there's lots of special activities for the young kids, to engage them and the community as a whole," said Abraham.

The list includes a Saturday morning reading hour, after-school programming and summer reading.

May 1 is the deadline for submitting an application. But trustees hope to get the position filled even sooner. An advertisement for the position was posted on several library job specific websites, including the Vermont Library Association's. It also was advertised through Facebook, the town's website as well as the library's.

"I'm already getting applications," Abraham said. "So far, it's been people who know the community well and feel connected but it doesn't have to be someone local. We're considering all different backgrounds and people from different areas. ... There's just great opportunities working in such a caring, close community."
