BELLOWS FALLS -- Sovernet Communications recently announced the launch of high-capacity transport to Boston that its president and CEO said will allow the company to purchase broadband less expensively and bring it back to Vermont and neighboring states at more attractive prices.
Rich Kendall said Sovernet has built an expansive fiber network throughout Vermont and the high-capacity transport will allow the telecommunications provider to connect it with a great one in Boston, which he called an international hub. He told the Reformer Boston is one of the cities in the Northeast that supports all major carriers. He explained carriers are defined as any large telecommunication company and are interconnected at data centers, known in the industry as carrier hotels.
Kendall said the carrier hotel that will be used in Boston is located at 1 Summer St. He said the high-capacity transport will allow Sovernet to help other carriers operate in Vermont.
"Our state-of-the-art network is now connected to the rest of the world," he said.
Sovernet's announcement came about three months after the company, headquartered in Bellows Falls, was awarded two contracts by Vermont to provide the high-capacity data transport to 92 state sites. Sovernet entered into multi-year agreements for three and five years, respectively, with the Vermont Department of Information and Innovation -- the state's internal IT provider -- and Vermont state colleges. The total contract value exceeds $2.5 million.
Peter Stolley, vice president of sales and marketing at Sovernet, told the Reformer his company was tapped to provide wide area networking services to Vermont DII, connecting 77 state locations. Kendall said the services are aimed at providing Ethernet inter-office connectivity and data transfer at great speeds. WAN services are also being provided to 15 state college sites throughout Vermont, including Lyndon State, Castleton State and Vermont Technical College campuses, and numerous Community College of Vermont academic centers.
Kendall said the Vermont DII and the state colleges must have recognized the opportunity to leverage Sovernet's recent communications infrastructure improvements to ensure efficient and reliable network performance.
