WINCHESTER, N.H. -- A Keene man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase and crashing into the Ashuelot Post Office.
Winchester Police say Gabe B. Gushlaw, 21, of Keene, was cited with reckless driving, disobeying an officer, driving after revocation, conduct after an accident, aggravated DWI, simple assault, speeding and a highway marking violation. This all started with a domestic disturbance that escalated into a chase that ended when Gushlaw lost control of the vehicle he was driving and slammed into the post office.
According to a report, Winchester Police responded to a domestic disturbance at a stopped motor vehicle in the area of 116 Keene Road. Officers learned that Gushlaw had been involved in a dispute with his girlfriend, also of Keene, who had been taken from the scene by a Winchester resident. Police say Gushlaw left the scene, behind the vehicle that was transporting the victim toward Keene.
Officers were taking information at the scene moments later and saw Gushlaw zip by them on Keene Road, heading toward downtown Winchester. They gave chase but lost sight of the 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass that Gushlaw was driving. A Hinsdale Police officer responding to assist saw Gushlaw pass him at a high rate of speed going west on Route 119. The police report states Gushlaw soon lost control of the vehicle, struck a fence and crashed into the side of the Ashuelot Post Office at 8 Main St.
Assistance was provided by the New Hampshire State Police, the Hinsdale, Chesterfield, Swanzey and Walpole Police departments and the Diluzio Ambulance Service, the Winchester Fire Department and the Federal Postal Investigator's Office, according to Winchester Police. The case is under investigation.
