JAMAICA -- Selectboard members want to learn more about a $5,000 investment it made when it requested additional police coverage from the Windham County Sheriff's Department.

"Maybe it would be a good thing to have some contact," said Jamaica Selectboard member Judy Flower. "We had asked him to be on the roads more."

Selectboard Chairwoman Lexa Clark will ask Sheriff Keith Clark to attend the next board meeting on June 23. Although the board receives a monthly report when the bill is sent and members can also find the report online, they expressed interest in receiving an update in person.

The last time Clark attended a meeting was when the board asked for increased police presence in town. That extra coverage was requested for fiscal year 2012.

The cost went from $20,000 to $25,000.

On Monday, June 9, Selectboard member Andy Coyne said there were things besides speed enforcement that the force was asked to do. Clark had previously spoke of how DUIs were handled in town.

"I'd like to hear his thoughts on how this year has gone, whether that's been cost effective and what his thoughts are on how the new contract worked," said Fraser.

Later, Fraser spoke of his experience in looking for a generator for the Town Offices in case of an emergency. A grant was secured from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program through the Windham Regional Commission to purchase the equipment but the $9,000 would not completely cover either of the two proposals received so far.

The grant could potentially cover an installation of a generator but not the generator itself. One bid for the job was $32,500 while the other was $22,424. Both included the cost of installation.

Fraser also searched the Internet for other generators. He was told by both bidders that the town would likely need one that has 38 kilowatts of power.

"We may find it easier to get the equipment online," he said. "And then put bids out to have it installed and perhaps get our guys to do the trenching."

The board decided not to make a decision regarding the purchase at the meeting. Fraser planned to continue pursuing it and reach out to the two bidders.

"I'll let them know the board is struggling with the amount and we're trying to reach a decision on how we can afford it," he said.
