KEENE, N.H. -- A Hinsdale man faces up to 40 years behind bars after a Cheshire County jury found him guilty on two charges of sexually abusing a girl over a period of about three years.

The verdict against Dale Desmarias, 40, was delivered on Wednesday and Assistant Cheshire County Attorney Keith Clouatre said sentencing will likely be held within six to eight weeks. Clouatre added, however, that a pre-sentencing investigation may be held and could produce a non-binding sentencing recommendation.

Desmarias was found guilty of two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault of a young girl he knew. He was accused of inappropriately touching the girl multiple times between 2004 and 2007.

Clouatre said Desmarias was acquitted on Wednesday of a third count of aggravated felonious sexual assault. Clouatre said that charge suggested a different pattern of sexual abuse on the same victim, who was under the age of 13 at the time of the alleged crime.

Clouatre, who presided over all the prosecution efforts, also told the Reformer attorneys agreed on Wednesday to dismiss a fourth count of aggravated felonious sexual assault against Desmarias after the victim found it too painful to recount the details of the alleged incident.

Judge John Kissinger declared a mistrial in another sexual assault case involving Desmarias and a different girl about nine months ago after the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.

Clouatre told the Reformer Desmarias was indicted by a Cheshire County grand jury on sexual assault charges in both cases in 2012. Clouatre said the separate case involved alleged inappropriate contact with a 12-year-old in late 2011 or early 2012. He said prosecutors have the option of retrying Desmarias in that case but will wait to find out what Desmarias' sentences will be in relation to the other charges. Clouatre said he does not want the victim to go through another trial if it is not necessary.
