Dorset

-- On Aug. 10, at approximately 11 p.m., the Vermont State Police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Church Street. Upon arrival, State Police observed damage to two large party tents set up in front of a church as well as damage to a tree on private property across Church Street. From speaking with witnesses, gathering physical evidence, and observing tire marks in the grass, troopers determined a vehicle was traveling west on Church Street at a high rate of speed when it went off the roadway striking, two different large party tents set up early for a Church function. The vehicle then weaved across the street, striking and knocking down a tree. The vehicle dragged and flung one of the large tent poles and damaged a residence on Church Street. State Police took measurements of tire marks and determined the vehicle was out of control for almost 500 feet.

The driver of the vehicle then left the scene without stopping and providing his information. The following day (about 10 hours after the crash), the operator called and reported the crash. He told State Police that he fell asleep at the wheel and didn't have a cell phone so he didn't call and make an immediate report. As a result, Matthew Arean, 34, of Londonderry, was cited with leaving the scene of an accident and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He was ordered to appear in court on Oct. 10.
