BRATTLEBORO >> The Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Department offers fitness classes three days a week for eight weeks at the Gibson Aiken Center, 207 Main Street. These classes begin on Jan. 11 and run through March 4 from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m.
Yoga on Mondays and Wednesdays is a class-based on traditional yoga posture and breath-work designed in a flowing sequence with emphasis on a balanced approach. Yoga/Pilates on Fridays is a combination of Yoga and Pilates. This class is based on the traditional Pilates exercises to strengthen and stabilize the core. The core consists of the abdominals, hip, back, and shoulder joints. Anyone over 18 years old is welcome, and the instructor can accommodate special needs. Sign up at any point and attend any or all classes. The classes can be modified to fit all levels of ability.
Kickboxing: Kickbox Conditioning/Tabata Classes will be offered two days a week, Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. and/or Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sign up for one class or both. These classes are for anyone over 18 years of age and run on a monthly basis. Kickbox skills will be combined with athletic conditioning and is an intense workout for serious participants.
Ping Pong Club: The Brattleboro Area Table Tennis Club will be meeting Tuesday nights on the Third Floor of the Gibson Aiken Center between 6 and 8:30 p.m. This program will run through April 26 and players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. The club will have open games and will occasionally provide lessons. Kids welcome on the first Tuesday of the month. Open Gym and Game Room: The Open Gym and Game Room will run through April 30 with the schedule as follows: Monday, from 3 to 5 p.m., Grades K to 6; Tuesday, 3 to 5 p.m., Grades 7 to 12; Wednesday, 3 to 4:45 p.m., Grades K to 6; Thursday, 3 to 5 p.m., Grades 7 to 12; Friday, 3 to 5 p.m., Grades K to 6; and Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m., Grades 7 to 12 and adults. When there is no school open gym is 1:30 to 5 for all ages. Open gym is for recreation basketball, sneakers must be worn on the gym floor. The Game Room is open for bumper pool, foosball, ping pong, and air hockey.
Skating Rink birthday parties: The Nelson Withington Skating Facility is available for skating parties. A party may be booked during any hours that the public skating is scheduled. Reservations and payment must be made at the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department, 207 Main Street, one-week prior to the date of the scheduled event. The fee for the party is $100, which includes 10 skating admissions, 10 skate rentals, a room to have refreshments in, and a 9-by-13 decorated birthday cake.
Gymnasium Birthday Parties: The Gym at the Gibson Aiken Center is available for gym parties The cost is $100, which includes a cake, basketballs, kickballs, wiffleball set and bases and use of the Large Conference Room for the cake, snacks and presents. Rental time is Saturday, 3 to 5 p.m. Reservations and payment must be made at the Recreation & Parks Department Office at least 10 days prior to the scheduled event.
Adult Co-ed Volleyball: Adults out of high school can participate in co-ed volleyball on Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This program runs through April 28 and the cost per night is $3 for Brattleboro residents and $5 for non-residents or there is a new 10 session punch card available for $30 and $55. The program is for all levels of players who want to gain knowledge, experience and improve on their game. Sneakers must be worn in order to participate.
Adult Badminton: On Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m., there will be adult coed badminton program, which will run through April 28. This program is designed for adults 18 and older of all abilities and is a great way to meet new people with the same interest while improving on your game. It is a freelance program with no instructor. Participants must wear sneakers and bring your own racquet. The cost per night is $3 for Brattleboro residents and $5 for non-residents or there is a new 10 session punch card available for $30 and $55.
Pickleball: Pickleball will be held on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and will run through April 28. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. Pick-up games will be played. All levels and abilities are welcome and participants must wear sneakers; some equipment is available for use. The cost per night is $3 for Brattleboro residents and $5 for non residents or there is a new 10 session punch card available for $30 and $55.
