SEVCA seeks nominees for board membership
WESTMINSTER >> Southeastern Vermont Community Action is seeking nominations for membership on its Board of Directors in the Client Representative Sector.
SEVCA is the anti-poverty agency whose mission is to "enable people to cope with, and reduce the hardships of poverty, create sustainable self-sufficiency, and reduce the causes and move toward the elimination of poverty throughout Windham & Windsor counties." The Client Representative Sector of the Board most directly represents the needs and interests of the low-income community that SEVCA was established to serve. In the spirit of its founding principle of ensuring "the maximum feasible participation of residents of the areas and members of the groups served," Client Representatives must be elected by the low income population in the area that they are to represent.
SEVCA's Executive Director Steve Geller explained the importance of having a strong and active Client Representative Sector on the Board. "We especially need the voices of people who bring the insight gained from personal experience struggling to overcome disadvantage and hardship, and can speak with firsthand knowledge about what people need to survive and move toward greater self-reliance. This is a unique opportunity to help us effectively direct our resources and services to best alleviate suffering and help people lift themselves out of poverty."
The SEVCA Board meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m., primarily at its main office in Westminster. Dinner is served before the meeting and Client Representatives can be reimbursed for transportation and child care costs as needed. The meetings are open and inclusive; the public is welcome to attend and participate. Anyone thinking about being a candidate for Board membership but unsure if it's for them, is encouraged to attend a meeting in advance.
