BURLINGTON (AP) - A Vermont man is dead after an officer-involved shooting after Burlington police say the man refused to drop the shovel he was wielding at them.

WCAX-TV reports that two veteran Burlington officers are on administrative leave as police continue to investigate the Wednesday afternoon shooting in the city's New North End.

Police responded to a report of a disturbance on Randy Lane at about 4:20 p.m. and say they found a middle-aged man on the lawn wielding a long-handled shovel.

Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling says the man was shot by one of the officers and died soon after at a local hospital. Police have not released the names of the deceased or the officers involved.

Schirling says the shooting is the first involving an officer since 1997.
