ESSEX JUNCTION (AP) - Hundreds of young chefs have competed as teams in Vermont's Junior Iron Chef competition this weekend.
Over 270 middle and high school students were expected to take park in the daylong event on Saturday at the Champlain Valley Expo Center in Essex Junction.
Sixty-four teams were given 90 minutes to prepare original recipes incorporating at least five local vegetables. They also had to follow United States Department of Agriculture school meal standards.
Organizers say this year the teams sourced all of their ingredients themselves.
Some of the dishes included rainbow root latkes with apple compote and maple spiced apple and goat cheese crepes.
The winning teams' will prepare their dishes for legislators at the Statehouse next month.
