BARRE (AP) - The company that makes a potent new painkiller that Vermont is restricting access to says it's committed to the safe and appropriate use of prescription medications.
Reacting to an emergency rule by the Vermont Health Department restricting access to a class of painkillers that includes Zohydro, the company Zogenix referred to a statement it issued last week about what it calls "misinformation" about the drug.
Gov. Peter Shumlin and Health Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen said the Health Department had issued an emergency rule to restrict how health care providers can prescribe certain hydrocodone painkillers such as Zohydro.
Last year, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Zohydro, which uses an extended release formula. Many fear the new drug could worsen the abuse of prescription painkillers and heroin.
