ESSEX (AP) - The Republican gubernatorial hopeful considered to be the candidate of the Vermont party says he's not going to attend a debate in Essex.

Scott Milne said Tuesday it didn't make sense for him to debate the candidates whom he feels will work against the party after next week's primary election.

Milne and three others have been invited to a Tuesday evening debate in Essex with the four candidates seeking the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

Milne, Steve Berry and Emily Peyton are the GOP candidates on the primary ballot. Libertarian candidate Dan Feliciano is mounting a write-in campaign for the GOP nomination.

Shumlin, a two-term incumbent who is facing a primary challenge from H. Brooke Paige, is expected to win his party's nomination.
