CONTOOCOOK, N.H. (AP) - Apple season is underway in New Hampshire, and Gov. Maggie Hassan is going apple picking.

She's picking the ceremonial "first apple of the season" Thursday at Gould Hill Farm in Contoocook.

The USDA says New Hampshire growers harvested 607,000 bushels of apples in 2013. They're expected to pull down just 381,000 bushels this season.

Some growers say the harsh winter may have led to fewer apples than usual.
