PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Now that Canadian lobstermen have reached an agreement with government and processing plants, their counterparts in Maine are watching to see what happens as the season begins for those who pull traps off southeastern New Brunswick.
Fishermen in Canada begin their two-month fishing season Monday. Many of them protested outside several processing plants this month and blocked trucks from delivering Maine lobster. They were demanding that the plants not accept cheaper lobsters from Maine and blaming Maine-caught lobster for driving down prices for them.
Processing resumed Friday a day after a judge issued an order restricting the protests, and Maine lobster dealers resumed shipments to Canada.
The union representing lobster fishermen in New Brunswick said Saturday that it reached an agreement with the provincial government and fish processing plants.
