In Brattleboro...

TOYS FOR KIDS’ DEADLINE: The final day to sign up for this year’s Toys for Kids project is Wednesday, Nov. 21. Brattleboro Detachment and Auxiliary Unit 798, Marine Corps League are scheduling appointments for the project today and Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. only. No appointments will be made after Nov. 21. The program is for families in need of assistance for their children at Christmas.

Those wishing to participate in this program must call 802-257-0001 on the specified dates only between 4 to 7 p.m. time. Do not call the American Legion, as they cannot make appointments.

When calling, participants must have Social Security or Medicaid numbers for their children, ages 12 and under, and when coming for the scheduled appointment, they must bring their cards with them.

This program is only for those families who have a genuine need for assistance.

WRAP INTRODUCTION: The Brattleboro Senior Center will host an "Introduction to WRAP" by Audrey Garfield, Certified WRAP facilitator, on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St. This is a free, one-hour workshop on WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan).

WRAP is an evidenced-based, simple, individualized plan that anyone can use to support their physical or emotional recovery and maintain their wellness. It is a straightforward symptoms monitoring and response system to use on a daily basis.

This session will provide a general overview of the five components of recovery and wellness and descriptions of the Wellness Toolbox and sections of a WRAP.

THOREAU TALK: Southeastern Vermont Audubon Society will sponsor a free program with English Professor Robert Fay on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at Brooks Memorial Library.

Fay’s talk and photographs are titled "Henry David Thoreau -- The Theatre of the Natural World." He visited the regions of New England which were of special interest to Thoreau to see them through the eyes of the famous naturalist and writer: Walden Woods, The Monadnock Region, Cape Cod, The White Mountains, The Maine Woods.

The library is located at 224 Main St. in Brattleboro.

TURKEY TROT: The Brattleboro Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, with a one-mile kids’ race at 9 a.m., followed by a three-mile race at 9:15 a.m. Both courses are out-and-back on Upper Dummerston Road, starting and ending near the Brattleboro Country Club.

There is no entry fee, but participants should bring a food item (canned goods, baked goods, dessert, something Thanksgiving related, etc.).

COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING: The annual Brattleboro Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden at 157 Main St. from noon to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22. This dinner is free for the entire community, and will be served buffet-style.

For over 35 years, whether at the River Garden or at the Common Ground restaurant, the Brattleboro Community Thanksgiving Dinner has been a time to celebrate with family, friends, and neighbors, whether through attendance, volunteering to serve, or donating homemade food. Plenty of turkey and ham with all the trimmings is served, as well as vegetarian fare, and many desserts, including vegan and gluten-free treats.

Throughout the day, local musicians serenade their fellow guests, while other volunteers drive meals to shut-ins around the Brattleboro area.

In Dover...

HUNGER GAMES: The Dover Free Library is hosting a "Hunger Games" movie event on Tuesday, Nov. 20, beginning at 7 p.m. in the library’s community room. This event includes games, activities, "Hunger Games" door prizes and a movie. Admission for this event is a monetary or a non-perishable food donation for the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry. This event is for participants ages 13 and older.

APPLE PIE SALE: Dummerston Congregational Church will offer their famous apple pies for sale on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. or by appointment. The pies are $12 each. Buy one for Thanksgiving or leave frozen for Christmas.

THANKSGIVING PIE SALE: Fresh, homemade pies for Thanksgiving will be offered for sale in front of the Post Office/Burdick’s on Wednesday, Nov. 21, between 9 a.m. and noon. There will also be a few cakes available. For the widest selection of pies, arrive early.

COMMUNITY MEAL: West Brattleboro Baptist Church will continue its Community Outreach Meal Ministry at 979 Western Ave. on Sunday, Nov. 25.

The free community luncheon will be held from noon to 2 p.m. The menu will include three homemade soups, including corn chowder, vegetable or chili, served with a roast turkey sandwich, potato chips, cake and ice cream and beverages.
