BRATTLEBORO -- The public is welcome to try their hand at playing local chess champion Eric Strickland, when he presents a Simultaneous Chess Exhibition on Friday, Sept. 6, at 5:30 p.m., in the parlor at Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main St.

Strickland will play up to 20 people at once in this exhibition, which is also a benefit for Centre Congregational Church.

"It’s a way to try and plug the game. Hopefully it’s novel experience, and people will want to play," said Strickland, a West Brattleboro resident and chess champion who carries a rating of 1,950. A person with a rating of 2,000 is considered an Expert.

Strickland has recently won both the Massachusetts Connecticut Valley Championship and the Harlow B. Dailey Memorial Tournament in Fitchburg, Mass. He teaches chess classes for youth and adults at the Gibson-Aiken Center in Brattleboro.

Admission to play is $20 for adults, $10 for youth age 18 and under. People are welcome to stop by and look in on the action, as well.
