BRATTLEBORO -- "The Hungry Heart," a powerful new documentary directed by filmmaker Bess O’Brien, will make its debut in Brattleboro at the Latchis Theater on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., The screening is part of a state-wide tour that is being co-presented by the Brattleboro Retreat and Kingdom County Productions.
"The Hungry Heart" explores the world of prescription drug addiction through an intimate portrait of Fred Holmes, MD, a St. Albans pediatrician who works with patients struggling with this disease. In addition, the film includes interviews with a number of older addicts who share their stories of struggle and redemption.
"People in this film display the unflinching honesty necessary for addiction recovery," said Dr. Geoff Kane, Chief of Addiction Services at the Brattleboro Retreat. "Fred Holmes displays the unwavering respect, hope, and accountability people need to get there."
The film provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of addiction and recovery, and reveals the many challenges that people face in confronting this relentless and difficult disease. The road to recovery is paved with both success stories and strewn with relapses, downfalls and tragic losses. However, through the movie we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their continued search for a life of recovery. It is estimated that prescription drug addiction affects one out of every three families in Vermont.
A post-film conversation will be held with Bess O’Brien, Dr. Fred Holmes, and members of the audience.
"A high percentage of the patients we treat at our hospital are suffering from addiction," said Robert E. Simpson, president and chief executive officer of the Brattleboro Retreat. "A film like ‘The Hungry Heart’ gives viewers a window into both the struggles and the humanity of people with addictive disorders. We of course jumped at the chance to work with Kingdom County Productions to make sure people from all over Vermont get to experience this important film."
