PUTNEY -- This week at Yellow Barn the Momenta Quartet arrives to embark on a study of Debussy and Ives string quartets.
Since its founding, the Momenta Quartet has been exploring new ways of expanding the tradition of the string quartet, presenting works by living composers of diverse musical backgrounds and cultures that are often underrepresented. Their residency at Yellow Barn takes them down a different path with works by Debussy and Ives, two composers who revolutionized the musical traditions of their own times. Their work, which includes working with mentor Gilbert Kalish, culminates with a performance on Friday, May 30, at Next Stage, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 general.
Kalish, a longtime Yellow Barn faculty member, will join the quartet for a discussion on Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m., at the Putney library (admission is free). Kalish will offer insight from his experiences with Ives’ music and lead a discussion with the quartet.
