BRATTLEBORO -- On June 7 and 8, SoBo Studio brings Bharata Natyam, a South Indian classical dance, presented in a Saturday evening concert and Sunday morning workshop.

Bharata Natyam is connected to the temple dancers of Tamil Nadu. Many of the Bharata Natyam dance postures are represented throughout various ancient sculptures residing in Hindu temples.

In a unique and informative performance on Saturday, June 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Jaan R. Freeman will weave the interpretation and Hindu mythology of this art form as well as provide the interpretation of the poetry in the sung text.

SOBO is also offering a chance to experience this art through a workshop titled "Fundamentals of Bharata Natyam" on Sunday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Both the performance and the workshop are held in SOBO Studio in the Cotton Mill.

Advance tickets to Saturday’s performance are $17; tickets are $22, $17 for seniors and students at the door. The workshop fee is $25. Advance package deal for the program and workshop is $42.

Freeman comes to Indian dance as a modern dancer who has performed and choreographed for the past 20 years in the U.S. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, BAM, Lied Center of Nebraska, Madras Music Academy and Carnegie Hall among other celebrated venues. Abroad, Freeman has taught modern dance in every major city in India since 1997 and toured Sri Lanka, Poland and India.

Freeman has been touring with Bharata Natyam -- For New Audiences since 2008, bringing this art to new audiences throughout North America.
