WINDHAM COUNTY -- Marlboro Morris and Sword, along with their band of musicians will perform their original sword dance and mummer’s play this Saturday and Sunday in locations around Windham County.
Both the sword dance and mummer’s play, traditionally performed on the streets in England near the winter solstice, were thought to bring good luck and assure the return of the sun. Preceding the dance is a death and resurrection play starring Mother Nature, the Fool, Joan of Arc, Joan of Arc’s mother, the Old Crone and a Registered Nurse. In the play, Joan’s nagging mother gets what is coming to her, but is saved by the power of Mother Nature.
The dance and play will be performed on Saturday at: 10 a.m. at Melrose Terrace; at 11 a.m., outside the Merchant’s Bank; at noon outside the Brattleboro Food Coop; at 2:15 p.m. at the Brattleboro Farmer’s Market; at 3:15 p.m., at the Newfane Heritage Festival.
On Sunday, the schedule is 10:15 a.m., at the Putney Farmer’s Market; 11 a.m., at the Putney Harvest Festival; 12:30 p.m. outside Burdick’s in Walpole, N.H.; 1:45 p.m., at the Scoop in Walpole; and 2:45 p.m., at the Walpole Winery.
